LESSON PROCEDURE

Vocabulary

  1. Watch the Vocabulary movie to introduce the new words, stopping to ask questions, give examples, and ask students to make connections to the words.
  2. Have pairs of students write a Story Impression with the new vocabulary words.
  3. Project the picture side of Flash Words onto the board or interactive white board. Students label the words they know and then flip the pictures to check if they are correct.

Grammar

  1. Watch the Grammar movie. After viewing the segment for each suffix, brainstorm other words the students might know. You can project the Suffix Chart and also give each student a copy to fill in the words with suffixes as they encounter them.

Movie

  1. Tell students that they will watch a movie about Ben going to the dentist. In pairs, have students discuss what they think they will see in the movie, or ideas about what might happen. Then create a web on the board as they share their ideas.
  2. In pairs, have students share stories about their own experiences at the dentist’s office, and then share with the class.
  3. As students watch the movie, have them fill in the words they hear containing suffixes on the Suffix Chart. To differentiate, turn closed-captioning on or off. Ask students to identify what parts of speech the different suffixes create. Challenge students to add more words they know, and to keep adding to the chart as they find new words.
