| [+]What is BrainPOP ESL? |
BrainPOP ESL coordinates English grammar and vocabulary into cohesive, level-appropriate lessons. Each lesson contains an animated, three-part movie, composed of a story, an introduction to the new vocabulary, and an illustration of the relevant grammar topics. Eight engaging features accompany each movie, accommodating each student from the first steps of English language learning and beyond. The program acknowledges differentiated learning styles as each of the components works to teach a discrete topic, while reinforcing the fundamental concepts taught in the lesson, and continually broadening the English language base. This self-contained program expands the student’s knowledge of grammar and vocabulary in a systematic and linear fashion, constantly building on previously taught elements to reach designated assessable goals. |

| [+]Who started BrainPOP ESL? |
BrainPOP ESL is the creation of Naomi Prawer Kadar, Ph.D. (1949-2010). Naomi was a dedicated language teacher who received her certification in ESL from the Hebrew University in 1973 and her Ph.D. in Yiddish Children's Literature from Columbia University in 2007. She was a passionate student and teacher of languages for over 40 years. Naomi’s extensive experience as a classroom teacher, curriculum strategist and teacher trainer culminated in her development of BrainPOP ESL. Sadly, on February 23, 2010, the world lost this extraordinary educator to cancer. Fortunately, Naomi’s educational legacy lives on. In her absence, BrainPOP ESL continues to delight and inspire language learners around the world, educating students in the same nurturing manner she refined in her many years in the classroom. |

| [+]What is BrainPOP ESL’s educational philosophy? |
The program brings together the best of language-learning pedagogy and the most innovative interactive media. At the core of BrainPOP ESL’s approach is the recognition of the needs of the language learner. Sensitive to the importance of contextualized language and content for the new learner, BrainPOP ESL couches its lessons in the familiar exchanges of an often-amusing interpersonal relationship that reflects everyday situations. Idiomatic and cultural nuances are incorporated through animated visuals of endearing characters that model social cues and demonstrate appropriate use of language, enhancing meaning by tapping into the universal appeal of humor. BrainPOP ESL addresses the needs of divergent learning styles by engaging students on multiple planes. The animated story that begins each lesson presents the new vocabulary and grammar in a contextualized fashion, activating the student’s intuitive comprehension. Following the story, the new words and structures are highlighted, directing the student to the focus of the lesson. The eight additional features help the teacher provide repetition while maintaining a sense of play. BrainPOP ESL continually challenges students with new material that expands the (learner’s) knowledge base. This paradigm of repetition and expansion, coupled with appropriate content, maintains the students’ comfort zone while constantly moving them forward in the self-paced progression of the learning sequence. In addition, BrainPOP ESL allows for both formal and informal self-assessment by the student, either through You Can Do It! (the quiz), or through fun exercises and games, providing the student a sense of satisfaction and ownership of his own learning process. The assessment tools also assure the teacher and parent of objective means to gauge the student’s progress. BrainPOP ESL creates a comprehensive language-learning program that employs all the necessary language skills for comprehension—listening, speaking, reading and writing—the building blocks of language. As the student makes progress in language skills, BrainPOP ESL introduces more content-based topics, thus expanding not only comprehension of English but also adding concepts and ideas that, by introducing essential principles for future study, will provide a basis for exploring and understanding the world. |

| [+]How is a BrainPOP ESL lesson structured? |
BrainPOP ESL is organized into levels of increasing difficulty. Each level is divided into six units; each unit is comprised of five lessons, four presenting new material, and one review lesson called Flashback! (Only the very first unit has no review lesson.) The Flashback lessons review the grammar presented in the previous lessons, but continue to introduce new vocabulary. A lesson encompasses a three-part movie and eight features. Each movie is composed of three sections. The movie begins with an animated story featuring Ben and Moby, which integrates new vocabulary and grammar into the conversations of these two friends. The next segment, Words to Know, explains the new vocabulary from each movie, and the last segment, Facts to Know, highlights the grammar points introduced in the movie. During any portion of the movie, the teacher may use the controls at the base of the movie screen, pausing, or repeating a segment for emphasis or additional review. Additionally, at the end of the movie, links appear to each of the segments for ease of repetition of each individual section. Each lesson is accompanied by eight features, which explore and reinforce the topics introduced in the movie. |

| [+]What are BrainPOP ESL’s features? |
BrainPOP ESL has eight features in each lesson, to help the student learn and have fun. Know More! explains the grammar points in the lesson. Words, Words, Words! defines and drills the new vocabulary. Read It! teaches the alphabet and basic reading skills. In the early units, Words You Know practices the sounds and letters taught in the current lesson and Words For Practice contains words from the current or previous lessons and uses the letters that have been taught thus far. As the lessons increase in difficulty, Read It! progresses to short reading comprehension exercises. Write It! offers instruction and practice writing the letters and words introduced in Read It!, leading to guided writing exercises. Hear It, Say It! allows the student to practice pronouncing words and phrases from the movie. Play It! is a fun game that can be played again and again. Warm Up! is the exercise where the student can review what he has learned before taking the quiz. You Can Do It! is the quiz, which shows the student how much he has learned. |

| [+]What other tools does BrainPOP ESL offer? |
Word Lists provides a list of every word used in BrainPOP ESL. The words are organized in two different ways. - The Alphabetical List contains every word taught in BrainPOP ESL. Students can find all the new vocabulary words as well as some words taught as part of the presentation of new grammar. When a student encounters a previously taught word that escapes his memory, he can find the word on this list, and be referred back to lesson where the word was originally encountered. He can refresh his memory by viewing the movie again, or using the flash cards in Words, Words, Words! in order to help himself understand the word that stumped him.
- The Unit Lists present the twelve new vocabulary words from each lesson alongside an evocative image taken from the original movie. Each word in this list is also linked back to the original lesson. Viewing the lesson list along with an image from the movie helps the student link the specific vocabulary with the context in which it was taught, aiding in retention of the words.
At a Glance, as the name suggests, presents an overview of all the content comprising BrainPOP ESL. In the Unit Lists, the name of each lesson appears with the grammar subject it teaches, enabling teachers to see where on the site BrainPOP ESL addresses each subject. The title of each lesson links to that lesson page, so teachers can jump right to that particular topic. This is particularly useful as a curriculum planning tool, and allows teachers to choose what best suits their teaching needs. The Alphabetical List organizes all the grammar subjects alphabetically, so you can search for a specific grammar topic, and see which lessons cover it, and link directly to those lessons. You can find At a Glance on our Homepage. Teaching Tools are dedicated to facilitating a seamless transition from the students’ interaction with the online program to its application in the classroom. A broad choice of classroom tools and teaching materials allows the teacher great discretion in efficiently tailoring the program for the specific needs of her/his students. - Know More! explains the grammar points for each lesson, and is also available to the student in the features section. The teacher may choose to guide her/his students through the rules in this feature, or may refer to it to prepare her/his own lesson. Know More! summarizes the scope of each lesson, and is presented here for easy reference as a tool for long-range planning.
- The Lesson Plans offer a panoply of choices for the classroom. Each Lesson Plan begins with a lesson plan overview, which summarizes all the elements of the lesson:
- a summary of the action of the movie
- the objectives of the lesson
- the grammatical points
- the building blocks of reading and writing
- a list of printable materials for classroom use
- the suggested time parameters for each session
At the bottom of the lesson plan overview are links to the printable materials, and three complete lesson plans. Each lesson plan contains an array of innovative and exciting in-class exercises, games and activities, to be used in conjunction with the online content. Creative homework assignments, warm-up and sum-up activities round out the lessons. Though the lessons are built in three forty-five minute sessions, the teacher may choose to use only the elements suitable for his/her class.
Extra Practice is an additional enrichment exercise or game that can be used by teachers in the classroom, or by parents at home. |
