  • Make enough copies of the Find the Shapes Image for all students.

LESSON PROCEDURE

Vocabulary

  1. Watch the Vocabulary movie to introduce the new words, stopping to ask questions, give examples, and ask students to make connections to the words.
  2. To prepare the students for the game that Ben and Moby play in this lesson’s movie, do a Closed Word Sort with the new vocabulary words. The categories are the parts of speech.
  3. Project the picture side of Flash Words onto the board or interactive white board. Students label the words they know and then flip the pictures to check if they are correct.

Grammar

  1. Play a Bingo game to review the affixes. Students can easily make their own by drawing a grid of 5 rows and columns, making 25 squares. It must be big enough to write words in the boxes. With the students’ help, make a list on the board of the prefixes and suffixes they’ve learned. The students must write a different affix in each box. Tell them to place them in random order. Having the students make their own Bingo cards ensures that they will all have the words in a different order. In order to win, the students must give a word for each affix that makes up their winning row. The affixes they have learned are:

    un- pre- tri- -ion -ment
    dis- post- multi- -ful -ive
    im- sub- over- -less -ous
    in- trans- under- -able -er
    re- bi- out- -ness -ist

Movie

  1. The movie Fun and Games is about how Ben and Moby pass the time indoors on a rainy day. Before watching, have partners discuss and list their own ideas, and then compare them to Ben’s ideas, after they see the movie.
  2. After students have watched the movie at least once, show it again and ask them to identify all the words with affixes (prefixes and suffixes) and/or conjunctions. They can highlight the closed-captioning or keep a list. You could also turn it into a game when students raise their hands or buzz buzzers when they hear a word.
  3. Have partners return to the list they made before the movie, and turn it into a written dialogue. To differentiate, put dialogue prompts on the board, such as:

A: There are lots of fun things we can do inside.
    B: Like what?
    A: We can ____________________________.
    B: We could ___________________________.
    A: We could ___________________________.
    B: We can _____________________________.
Give them time to practice, and then present their dialogues to the class.
  4. Distribute a copy of the Find the Shapes Image to every student. Have them identify everything in the picture that is in the shape of a circle, square, or triangle. They can keep a list of the objects they find, sorted according to the shapes. You could also do it as a class contest to see who finds the most objects. To differentiate, some students can circle or point to the objects, while other students can give an oral or written description. Alternatively, project the image and have students identify the objects on the board.
  5. Ask volunteers to explain how to play the game that Ben and Moby played in the movie.
  6. Play the game Charades with the class. Pass out index cards to small groups of students. The teams think of words or phrases to be acted out, and write them on the cards.

Features

  1. Watch Hear It, Say It. Students may listen and repeat sentences from the movie.
  2. Students do the remaining interactive features of the lesson: Play It, Warm Up, and You Can Do It.
ACTIVITIES
  • Have students create a game similar to the one Ben and Moby play in the movie. They can use a poster board and index cards, or any available resources and materials they need to be creative! Play the games in class.
  • Bring board games to class for students to play if they have free time. The games should be in English.
